We have adopted the OFSTED and Every Child Matters framework: Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which guides our planning and programming.
The planning is primarily through adult-led, child-initiated play. We provide a wide-range of resources and great facilities (see facilities section for more details), which are made readily available to the children. Every month, each room will have a theme and will focus activities around the theme. Activities both indoors and outdoors include the use of arts and crafts, role-play, cookery, stories, music, jigsaws, collage and constructions as well as messy, creative, water and dramatic play.
We have recently invested in a new software programme called Tapestry, which allows nursery staff to record observations and report progress on the tablets, which provided in each group room. In 2017 we plan to roll this system out and allow parents to check their child’s Tapestry profile themselves from home.
There are also specialised art, role-play and sensory rooms, as well as two large garden areas with both small and large outdoor equipment; including a fantastic and very popular play structure.
We regularly take the children on trips to the park, local shops, farms and the library, with occasional trips to places of interest and an annual panto. Oh yes we do!
Staff facilitate the children’s activities and record what each one does every day, using their observations to plan the next steps in their learning and development. That’s how we harness their natural curiosity and build on the seven areas of learning.
